Zoology in Cambridge

November 11, 2012 by

While Max was having his eyes sucked and burned off (I probably shouldn’t have read the description of surgery on the way down to him having it done) we went to the Zoological Museum to distract ourselves. This was quite difficult actually as I was mentally planning how I was going to run the family and the business when Max had gone blind. I’m nothing if not a worst case scenario girl. Apparently going blind isn’t actually a worst case scenario of laser eye surgery, but I didn’t let that stop me doing any disaster planning 😉

When we got there, the Big Draw on Tour was in residence, so the girls all grabbed clipboards and had a lovely time sketching. I would never have imagined they would have such fun with this actually, it’s testament to our art days that they’ve come on so much.

Scary things.

The marine area really pulled Josie and Maddy’s strings and we spent ages up there. Josie did lots of looking and asking and finding out and some really detailed sketching and Amelie was surprisingly patient too.

Was nice to have Fran with us too.

Must be annoying if you drop this one.

Intent on making the perfect copy.

Much conversation about how my nana has one of these in her bathroom and the rights and wrongs of such harvesting.
Untitled

I’m sorry, these have to be aliens.
Untitled

Conversation about why the rhino skeleton has a replica horn 🙁
Untitled

Maddy’s fantasy animal.

Fran’s rather remarkably un-Fran-like drawing.

Serious face.

Fran-ism of the day…

“Wow… the elephant is taller than me! I didn’t know that! But I expected it to be fatter…”
(Top sets at school. Seriously. Anyone can home educate).

Then we got the call to say Max was done (in less than 90 minutes) and could SEE! So we grabbed lunch, went to collect him and then walked him to the bus. He insisted on the bus. I had said it was a bad idea. You’ll have to wait for eye-installment-the-third to see who was right.

snap – we were here on Thursday and we all loved it. We were planning to visit the Sedgewick but discovered that they closed for lunch so discovered this and uses it to bridge the hour gap.It was amazing (far better than the Sedgewick for us!). Glad that you all had a good time.

I like the idea of drawing things in a museum. I’m glad the surgery went well too. x

One of these days I’d love to get to Cambridge. My two must be the only home-educated kids who have never drawn in a museum, they refuse!
