Rabbit Sagas.

April 19, 2015 by

We’ve had a lot of rabbits over the years. There was Peter who we bought when Fran was 4 and didn’t live a long life, catching myxi at the vets when he was a bit more than 2. He had a mate, called Button who got lonely so Peter was replaced with Smartie, who was rather daft and no Peter but lived well enough. Then Fiver came along too when we first moved here but had to live away from them because boys don’t mix, so we ended up with a mate for him called Clover.

We had a tragedy in one run when a diligently refilled water bottle split and over 48 hours of warm weather one rabbit didn’t get enough to drink. It was awful and the poor girls who had refilled it daily but not spotted the problem were heartbroken. We saved Button who went on to live for a couple more years but Smartie died. It turned out to be a portent of doom as Freddie died a few weeks later. I had even said at the time it felt as if it was a warning or a preparation.

Fiver, Clover and Button had a nice few months and then Biscuit came to live with us, moving in after a litter explosion due to gender confusion at a friends house. And then I lose the thread slightly but I know Button died when I was in the depths of ttc misery and Fiver just stopped running one day for no obvious reason at all. Poor Clover; she and Fiver were an old married couple.  In all of that we fostered Monster, who then went off to live at the home Biscuit came from.

Action bunny! Juniper was in jail for playing rough. He had his hop about after.

So into our remaining twosome moved Nutmeg and Juniper, part of another litter explosion. I was unconvinced about taking two boys but the rescue get was convinced it was fine if they were brothers and neutered early.

It was. For a while. And then it wasn’t. Juniper went all alpha male and grumpy and attacked his brother.

So today Juniper (my favourite ever name) went off to live at Biscuit and Monster’s original home where he became Treacle and we collected two of their sisters who needed a new home due to a change of circumstances.

Smokey has become Pepper but we can’t find a new name for Snowy (puddle rules dictate it should try to tick 2 boxes out of food, spice/herb or Watership Down name).

Regardless, they seem very cute.

Juniper had to go and live with our friends as he fell out with his brother but today we rehomed their sisters with us. Meet Beau and Pepper; run is temporary quarantine before they move into the main run.

Edited: name ideas still being touted – the front one looks like being Pepper and the white one Flora. (Please don’t lecture me on run size, it’s just a holding one we use when we are doing logistical manoeuvrings. They don’t live in it. We have an expandable aviary for them).

Naughty rabbit tried to burrow out today. Fortunately she's not very clever!
