For Freddie. #EveryNewborn

June 19, 2014 by

11 years ago when we started blogging, my friends and I wondered if blogging would ever be a way to change the world or even our own small worlds.

It’s such a long time ago. So much has happened.

There is a great deal more to say about this picture but I want to grab the moment, the first moment, just to marvel at what can happen.

The story of this picture isn’t mine, it’s a wider story about ending the deaths of 2.2 million babies a year who die while their mother labours or on their first day, their only day, of life. Preventable deaths. Deaths and grief that could be avoided with better training, basic facilities and services, better understanding.

It’s a huge challenge but not unachievable; there are developing countries that are already closing in on targets that once seemed unachievable. Child mortality has nearly halved in 25 years globally.

I’m passionate about ending this pain and waste. I’m passionate about altering the outcome so that women begin to expect their children to live. I’m ready to be a voice.

But just this moment of my day, my tiny part in it, I will grab for the little boy, our little Freddie, who made me into the woman who knocked on the door to ask our government to commit to better outcomes for babies like him.

I did this for you, little one.

I love that stat – child mortality has nearly halved. Isn’t that a fabulous thing to be able to say? It’s inspiring to know that people like you can change the outcome for so many children. Love you Merry x
