Lax Toddler Parenting #2: drawing on walls

November 6, 2013 by

There is a particular type of silence which all parents learn about; the sound of silence that can be created by a toddler doing something they ABSO. LUTELY. SHOULD. NOT. BE. DOING.

Been there?

And this, my friends, is the first of our 'oh my god, he's gone very quiet' moments #parentfail #ionlymadeacupoftea

I only made a cup of tea; he was in the room next door and I stirred the tea and mused a bit and listened to the sound of Bene chuntering 6ft from me. And the suddenly, I realised I was listening to one of those silences. 🙄

In the moments it took me to make that tea, he had found a pack of felt tip pens in a drawer that I had no idea even contained them, opened them, got the lids off and….

DA… DA… DAAAAH!

Perpetrated artwork.

It’s possible the lax parenting was not noticing it happening.

Or maybe it was that I came in and watched him while he finished off his picture on the lower portion of the door. He was so happy (and has a great pen hold) and it seemed a shame to stop him. I was going to have to clean it anyway, it made little difference what I cleaned up.

What’s the worst thing that your toddler has ever done in one of those silences?

LOL! Been there too, had wax crayons on walls, carpets & all over the tv! Even if there is a plentiful supply of paper on which to draw upon at the kitchen table they will still manage to draw on something else. My LAX parenting means that they can do something right in front of me & I’ll not notice the silence (I’m most likely knitting). As I wear glasses, I have to take them off for knitting & close up work, so they’re just a blur in front of me really! (That’s my excuse)!

Haha! Love it 😉 one of my most memorable moments was finding my older two painting their own faces with blue paint (i knew there was painting going on I just thought we were going to paint on the paper….)

Covered herself and the carpet in epaderm – took a photo before taking it off her!

another vote for sudocream – carpet and toddler all white.
Worst was breaking the 2ft high whisky bottle that was containing all loose change – young toddler had pulled it over to get at the monies, bottle smashed into large, spiky pieces that could easily have lacerated/ caused significant penetrating injury had he fallen onto them and lots of little shards just right for sticking in all kinds of places. Very difficult to suppress urge to screech in horror as was wobbly on his feet and if taken by surprise would definitely have fallen into the pile of glass. He was quite happily playing with coins in the middle of disaster. Still makes me shudder. Only went for a quick wee!

Definately sudocrem, 5 minutes before we should have been leaving the house to go to MIL’s wedding, I found dd sat on the sofa head to toe in cream, she had even got her comb, stuck it in the tub and combed it through her hair! I couldn’t resist taking a quick photo before running upstairs to plonk her under the shower. On another occasion, I found ds smearing the underside of the dining table with margarine. And another time, dd climbed into the coal bucket just after she’d had a bath and was trying to eat a piece of coal, again I took a photo before returning her to the tub lol!

Sudocrem here – we still have a doll, eight years on who bears the marks of the Sudocrem day! There have been a few hair-cutting incidents too. Oh, and book-cutting …. that was the day I started keeping my more precious books well out of reach. But, yes, totally *always* take a photo!!

My little sister painted half my mums face with red lipstick while my mum was asleep. She did exactly half of her face and not a single bit wasn’t painted 🙂 my mums a deep sleeper!xx

    Hi, there. Thanks for post.
The sound of O OUH… 🙂 Yup, been there.
I’m sorry I know it was a bit of damage and cleaning, but it was so funny. 🙂 Good job for letting him finish.
