I wouldn’t normally do this on here but many of my blog readers have been massive supporters of our shops (indeed without our friends, they would never have got off the ground) and I need some help with something. I’ve no idea if this will work but I’m doing it here, partly because I know it will get greater exposure and partly as I might get to give something to a few of my readers.
As some of you will know, our businesses are now our only income; they do okay and we’re fine but we know that we need to grow them more to support us long term and this month Max and I took the decision to work as UK Distributor for Rubens Barn dolls. We’re very excited about it particularly as we have a real passion for the dolls. We’ve had several in the house for a good couple of years now and they are hugely loved. Something about their shape, their size and their weight and even more something about their unconventional look, has made them really adored by all our girls.
Just after Freddie died, Rubens Barn kindly sent Josie one of them, the little boy doll, Eric, part of their new baby range which we just love. They are soft, cuddly, anatomically correct and seem to give back as much love to her as she gives it. Rubens Barn dolls are suitable for the Empathy Doll Approach, a method of using dolls with children to explore emotional concepts and feelings, and it has been really good for her. But more than anything, he is just a lovely armful of adorable doll, the nicest soft baby doll I think I have ever seen.
To make a success of this new part of our business, I need to get the word out so here is my offer. I’m making it big, because we have to make this count, so I’m really going to need some help. (I honestly don’t know if I can get anywhere close to this number.)
If I can get 100 comments here, I’ll give out a baby to a randomised person in the comments thread.
If I can get 200, I’ll give away one based on what I think of what you said about the doll, because I’m looking for comments that will help me sell these and give me views of what customers like about them. Please write in a comment only if you are happy for me to use your words in our sales material.
If I can get 300 I’ll give our one based on a randomised tot up of how many places you let people know about them (twitter, facebook, blog, named forum) so make sure in your comment you tell me where you spoke of them.
If I can get more than that, I’ll have to think of something else – maybe a voucher to spend on the site.
I know I’ve asked for big numbers and maybe I’ll only get 10 comments 😆 in which case, I’ll say thank you and try something else. I will be closing this in one week, on Saturday morning next week at 11.59am
Lastly, you may have seen that I am doing occasional sponsored posts on here now. I want to explain why, in case you missed it before. I’m giving all the money from one set of them directly to Hinchingbrooke SCBU; it’s something that I can do for them, it’s giving me something interesting to try and write to a brief about and it is helping me focus on something positive. I can only say that *I* am not benefiting other than psychologically but I apologise because I have been offered a couple to do which need doing this weekend – the money for the SCBU unit is good and so I hope you’ll forgive me 🙂 The other bits, which are less invasive really, I am spending the money on days out for the kids which in turn I hope will give me something worth blogging about 🙂
So; normal service to be shortly resumed – I’ve been up to my ears in Nano this last couple of weeks but I’ll soon be back with all the half written posts 🙂
Thanks in advance for your support. I’m looking forward to giving out some freebies.

I may well not be the best person to comment on a doll, as you know they scare me (but I have to put up with them, having had 4 daughters!) What I will say is this one looks pretty unthreatening, and I like the idea of anatomically correct dolls, because…well, they just should be, shouldn’t they? I think Calixa would love it, she likes her dolls.
I will mention this on my Facebook status update for you, and also on the Goddess-Jewels page as I attracted quite a few people who enter competitions and give-aways there when I did one myself.
Good luck, Merry :o)
June says
Oh, and I can mention it on Fluff and Early Years too, I’m sure winning a doll like this at this time of year would be useful for any of us 🙂
Susannah says
I like the fact that the dolls of differing ethnicities all have mainstream Swedish names – it avoids that exoticism of non-white dolls which I’ve seen in some doll lines elsewhere.
Here’s to your new venture, and hoping you get lots of commenters.
Avril says
These dolls are just lovely ! I think my 10 month oldgrandson( this little boy loves dollies!) may well have to get one as a Christmas gift !Or Nanny might just treat herself to one!Good luck with your venture, will post on F/B, but will be spreading the word amongst my friends, us grandmothers are always on the lookout for something different fr the little ones.x
Jenny says
These dolls are lovely, can I ask are the baby ones baby sized? Would they be suitable for using in class as breastfeeding demo dolls? Do there heads fall back when picked up ir are they fixed? They are really really nice I wish you every success with selling them.

What a lovely idea, and such a beautiful doll, I like that they are anatomically correct as all babies are and nice to see a boy doll for a change!
Miri says
Hi, I’m here via June’s post because I loved the look of the doll. We have a small collection of waldorf dolls, as I am not a fan of plastic dolls at all. My daughter has 4 dolls which she loves to bits, though she now recently has to share them with her little brother, as he is starting to really like carrying them around and putting them to bed. I love the look of this doll because it’s soft and sweet, and certainly has that “potential favourite toy” look about it.
We’d love to “win” one of those beautiful dolls, especially so close to christmas, it would certainly make our little George very happy to have his own special friend.
Thanks for the opportunity!
<3
Katy says
They are lovely dolls – almost impossible not to pick up and cuddle, and so much squishier, warmer and yummier than a hard-bodied doll :o)
Have shared on FB and will post on a couple of parenting fora ;o)
Jo says
What gorgeous dolls! DD1 and DS love playing with their ‘babies’,. especially now we have another real life baby in the house. Our dolls are just the usual toy shop plastic and cloth ones, but these look lovely.
Good luck with the business – I’ve book marked you 🙂
Anne says
We love these dolls and have 2 for our boys who sleep with them in their beds every night!!
merry says
Jenny, I have to admit that because of recently losing our newborn, I have been avoiding holding our own Eric (known here as Oliver) too much as he feels somehow VERY newborn, an armful of baby, nicely weighted, who feels like he wears a cloth nappy because of the size of his bum. Their necks are not too heavily stuffed and have a slight flop as they are designed to look up at you a little and can be worked to a more floppy but not too floppy, feel.
Whenever I do hold him, I pretty much always find myself holding him just as I would hold a baby.
Thanks you all for taking part.
Carol says
These dolls look just beautiful. All of our kids (boys and girls) had had a doll but nothing so beautiful as these. Good luck with business, may it keep flourishing.
Taryn says
We have some of the Ruben dolls as a gift for the children for Christmas and we are sure the children will love them. They are some of the cutest dolls I have seen and lovely to hold.
Sarah says
Y’know, I blummin’ hate giveaways that require you to comment and share and all that, but I’ll join in for a Rubens Barn doll because I know how gorgeous they are. My girls should be well past the age of playing with dolls but I know for a fact that Abbie’s Rubens Barn doll is never far from her bed – it’s beautifully snuggly and she loves it. She would love some more clothes for it too, and the range of clothes is equally beautiful, so I’m sure you’ll do well with them.
So while I’m here I’ll share on facebook and my blog as well … in for a penny, in for a pound!

I love squishy dolls – much kinder on the feet when accidently stood on when strewn across the floor! These ones in particular look fabulously cute and cuddly. Good luck with your venture and everything else!
Isabel says
These dolls look simply lovely. As the mother of an 8yr girl I get tired of the same old same old in the doll world (and so does she to be honest) so a well made, beautiful, ‘correct’ dolly is a wonderful idea.
Jax says
I think these dolls are really beautiful. As you know, when Big chose her first doll she went with an anatomically correct baby boy, but he was hard bodied and not nearly as cuddly and warm as these ones look – I would far prefer Smallest to have a doll like this.
And let’s see, I’ll blog, and fb (both me and my page), and tweet, and I know a couple of forums I can mention it on too.
🙂

Beautiful dolls 🙂 I hope you get heaps of comments x

I love these dolls and wish u every bit of success. They look well made and ready for any rough and tumble! Will these be ok to go in the washing machine? A lovely range :).
merry says
Kirstine, this is a good spot- I left that line off the description – so…
“The dolls are machine washable(soft cycle) and tumble dry(low temperature). Outfits should be hand washed.”
Thanks, will add it.
Jenny – I’ve been hefting Eric/Oliver and I think an excellent sling/breastfeeding doll actually.

These dolls are absolutely adorable, my daughters would be over the moon if Santa was to deliver one on Christmas Day!! 🙂 I love the fact that they are anatomically correct, so many doll makers shy away from this which is ludicrous IMHO! Great job, they’re fab 🙂

Immediately I saw these dolls I fell in love with them, first time I’ve come across them. I like the way they look, and think the care and attention in the detail is very clever. I’m sure they will appeal to all ages, boys and girls a like, indeed I’d like one of my own. When are you hoping to start your business venture and will I be able to find the information here on your blog? Best wishes with all your business ventures. Sharon
Joey Grey says
These dolls look really lovely. I can’t find any bigger pictures so that I can get a really good look at their faces, but they look very cuddly and sound like they are the kind of dolls kids have for years rather than a few months. Good luck with your business, I’m off to have a look round at the rest of your site now.
I’ve tweeted and Facebooked your blog.

We’ve got them in stock already 🙂

looks like some oen can already do a very good job of those
and the fact that he has a willy, the girls will love it, poke it and talk about it, this little brother wouldn’t complain!

Fab doll – ideal for my 2 year old grandson – he has just ‘acquired’ a new baby brother and is feeling a bit ‘left out and although he wants to be involved the demands of a newborn are proving problematic at the moment’ – what a great way of giving him his own beautiful, squishy “baby” to look after.
Wendy Stanger says
what lovely dolls – thank u x

having been un-naturally attached to a Cabbage Patch doll for a while (shriek!) I know that dolls really can help healing hurt hearts. I’m glad Josie has something so wonderfully well made to direct her love towards.
Ellie Peabody says
Very sweet doll. Looks soft and squidgy 🙂
Emma says
Lovely looking doll – nice huggable size too! Love the fact it doesn’t wet, cry, make silly noises and it probably won’t knock you out when when your nearly 3yo throws it at you!! Good Luck with promotions & advertising for you business. 🙂
Denice says
Beautiful doll and yes they should be anatomicaly correct, being a mum of 5, my boys have and do play with dolls, just like my girls play with the cars and garage, toys should be for either and having these beautiful dolls will encourage more parents to hopefully stop being swayed by advertisers aiming for a particular sex.
lisa price says
Hi Merry
I’ve not heard of these dolls before but when I saw them I breathed a sigh of relief as theya re so much more what I would want my daughter to have than the hard bodied, whire,,natomically incorrect ones she has.
yay for the lovely dolls

Samantha Jaques says
What beautiful dolls!
Not scarily lifelike, but have all the correct parts and dimensions. I’m a midwife and would absolutely love one of these as a breastfeeding support demo doll and for helping parents learn how to care for and change a baby without disturbing their newborns!!
He would also make wonderful company at work when I’m away from my real babies for 13 hour shifts…. lol xxx
(and both of my little boys – 10 months and 28 months would love him too…..)
Helen S says
I love the Eric doll and some of the others are lovely too but a few of them are just plain scary (sorry and I wouldn’t want to give them to my young granddaughter (the scary ones); maybe she won’t find them as scary as me though.
I don’t know an awful lot about the dolls other than what I’ve read here but it would be good if the dolls were available in different sizes, dolls prams can be quite large (my granddaughter (age 2) loves to sit in hers go give you an idea) so different size dolls would be great.
Good luck in your venture, I’ll be back x
Helen
merry says
lol Helen, do you mean the Original dolls? Absolute top seller and massively well liked – they do seem odd to look at, really the internet is not the thing for them, but all my girls have one and they are incredibly lovable. Sort of cabbage patch like in a way but they have a real charm. My first instinct was exactly like yours but within half an hour of being given a sample, I was carrying one round with me like it was a child. I adore them.
All the comments are great. Thank you – keep sharing the link – not far to the first giveaway.
Sam says
That looks like a lovely doll – just the thing for a toddler, it looks so soft to hold 😀
Debbie says
I think he’s just beautiful. If we were to win him the first thing I’d have to do is buy another three, because there’s no way my kids would be able to share him. Actually, I might need to buy four. to compensate of the fact that my child-bearing days are over.
Julie Wilson says
Ah these little dolls look so lovely and I’m sure my little girl would soon make him/her her favourite baby 🙂

Saw this on Katie’s fb. The dolls look lovely – the ‘right’ size and weight for cuddling, soft and machine washable. Never seen them before but interested!

What an adorable doll! My two youngest boys would love one of these, they love everything about babies, esp since the arrival of their new little sister.
Naomi says
Hannah has Max on her Xmas wishlist:-) I think they are gorgeous dolls which combine the squishy snuggability of a soft toy with the realism and quirky originality of a collectors doll . Rubens dolls are dolls that could be handed down the generations as an heirloom. Love them! Shared the link on my FB .

My DD would love one of those, I’m sure!

oh my, he’s just gorgeous! I love SOFT baby dolls – I know plastic dolls maybe more practical, but I just find them a bit… scary and nowhere near cuddly enough. Also – anatomicall correct, HORRAH! Admitedly my kids have probably seen it all, but then again, even more important that THEIR babies look ‘normal’! I’ve always found that puzzling to be honest… You have a baby for kids to ‘practice’ on (to a certain extent) and it dosn’t even look right?! Scary… And machine washable – definite plus!
I would LOVE to win one – there’s always room for one more 🙂 Plus I have Christmas and 3 birthdays coming right up, and several baby mad kids!

First time I have heard about these dolls but from the photos they look adorable. Would be interested in knowing more about “Rubens Barn” and where the dolls are made.

These are such lovely dolls! I love that they’re not only diverse, but also anatomically correct. I think that’s a lovely lesson to teach children. I sadly don’t have any children to give one too but I would more than likely either donate the doll to a friend or childrens charity if I were to win :o). I will be sharing the link on Facebook and Twitter. Thanks!

I first heard about these dolls on Natural Mamas when someone started selling them. I know they are well loved by the mamas who bought them and it would be a great place for you to advertise via their WAHM boards ;~) I know someone’s put the link up already but it needs shouting about!
I wish you well xx

We have two of the larger dolls which both my girls absolutely adore. They get pushed around in buggies, changed, loved, cuddled, put in bed, car seat all sorts and are never out of their beds at night. They’re just so squishable and also great for an additional pillow I’ve observed! Lol

My 7yr old dd is not really into dolls, but the one doll she does have is a boy Corolle (who she called Max and loves to bits!). I love that these dolls come in both (anatomically correct!) sexes, and that there are loads to choose from! I’m sure my dd would love these dolls, and perhaps even her brothers too – they look so snuggly and cute! The idea of a cloth nappy like bum really appeals to me too – I miss that!! Actually, all the Rubens Barn dolls look great – really huggable!
I think it is a great alternative to all those pink, hard plastic, baby dolls that do everything – wishing you all the best with this! I shall share on FB too!
Helen says
I love those dolls. I’ve looked at them on your site over the years & wished I had someone to buy one for! Once we have children in our family I’m sure they’ll be on Santa’s list!

I saw this post on my friend’s FB page. Not sure what made me look at it really – just one of those spooky things…….I found your post about Freddie. We lost Abigail at 10 days in 2005. She was one of twins, born at 25 weeks and I knew from the moment I was pregnant that it wasn’t going well. Lottie is healthy, happy and nearly six! The dolly is gorgeous and if we were to win it I would donate it as a raffle prize to raise funds for First Touch the charity supporting the NNU at St George’s Hospital, Tooting. Nicola x

I have made Waldorf dolls for both of my daughters, and each time I finished one it truly felt like I’d given birth again! Fabric dolls have an innate warmth about them, that really makes them feel alive and so very lovable. I gave the dolls to my daughters for their 8th birthdays, and would love to give one to my son for his birthday in February. It would be great to be able to give him a boy doll, and I have to say I have been shying away from sewing boys bits ‘n’ pieces, lol! One of your beautiful dolls would be a perfect solution. They are so gorgeous. I wish you lots of luck with your new venture, and will share on FB.xx

My 9 yo keeps wanting dolls, but she has no idea how to play with them. Over the past 2 yrs or so, she has started to develop empathy and has become good with babies, but still no idea of what to do with a doll … yet a doll is top of her wish list of Christmas again.
I love the Swedish language, I love Sweden, I loved the Bullerby Children and the Saltrkakan stories when as a child. With a doll this cute, AND it being Swedish, I just know that I will have to try one of these with my daughter. Maybe this will be the one which satisfies her desire to play with dolls! The only problem will be choosing which one to get! … oh, and her 6 you brother is almost certain to be deeply wounded if he doesn’t get one of his own!

These dolls look fabulous. Soft bodied dolls are so much nicer than plastic ones. I love the idea that there is such a lovely baby boy doll. Male dolls are so hard to come by…so these will fill a niche in the market. Both boys and girls will be tomorrow’s parents so it is a vital part of play for them to enjoy role-play with dolls. I normally run a mile from competitions, especially with advertising involved, butI tihnk this is marvellous. My 2 yr old was talking about willies earlier, and I was thinking we need a doll or book to help explain, but haven’t seen a doll I’d willingly give shelf space that the girls would love. A weighted doll, anatomically correct would be well loved in this house, so I’ll link to here on my blog, facebook and mention on I want my mum.

Hi,
They are so gorgeous, I’ve been looking for a doll for my 3 year old for Christmas, just hope I can now get one in time. I am not a doll lover, big tom boy as a child and having a daughter who loves dolls has felt like a challenge for some reason, so to find one that I like is great.
Sue says
Lovely dolls to last a lifetime. I still have my first and favourite doll, she’s 57 and had “rooted hair”, not stuck on! I only manage Facebook, so have posted there…..4 grandchildren, 2 boys 2 girls with loving arms and open hearts.

Jenn says
Merry, these dolls look so sweet and I’m rather picky on dolls. L only has two because I haven’t been able to find more that seem worth the money. I’m sure L would love to have one and I’d love to be able to give her the little Erik doll as something to help her with her grief over losing Micah. Do you ship to the US? I haven’t a clue how much it would be. Maybe I could find a shop in the US that sells them?
merry says
Jenn, we absolutely do ship to the US – I think at that price the site possibly charges £29.95 as a default but what we do is weigh the item and if we can refund, we do. These don’t weigh 2kg and would go in a bag, so you’d get a refund of nearly half that cost I think.
We’ve sold loads of these over the last few days and we’re running short, unbelievably, with more stocks only able to get to us just before Xmas, so I should book your dolly quickly.
I’d encourage anyone else to do the same – if you win the giveaway, we’ll refund you for the one you bought, to make it effectively free 🙂
Nicola, I am so sorry you lost your girl – thank you for commenting.
All of you – you’ve done the most amazing job on this for us – we are so grateful and delighted by the interest – thanks!

I’m a big fan of dolls that are completely soft, especially as my 11 month old’s favourite game at the moment is hitting herself round the head with toys – this would be painless but still fun! All the best with the business!

I bought a Rubens Barn original Harry for my daughter last Christmas, he joined us on Christmas day and was renamed Marlon and has been part of our family since. He goes everywhere with us including camping and Blackpool Pleasure Beach and people often mistake him for a real baby. My 2 year old son puts him to bed every night so I am ordering one of these new babies today for him. I have 4 young children so if I won one of these someone else would be very happy with their new friend to play with.

I love the dolls, I have two little girls and get fed up of seeing plastic dolls in toy shops quite often wearing make up or high fashion clothes. With the Rubens Barn doll you get a more honest toy that is cuddly, sweet and also anatomically correct, there are boys and girls and a range of ethnicities and sizes, the perfect present for any child this Christmas

Rubens Barn Dolls are just so adorable! Every child should have one to bond with! I love that they are ‘proper’ baby shaped and anatomically correct, an aspect lacking in much of today’s toy market. Gorgeously cute!

My DS would have adored this, but he’s 4.5 now and gone a little past that stage. He loved playing with the dolls house that belonged to the girl next door and he quite enjoyed running around with their buggy. We bought him playmobil hospital, as it was close to a dolls house, which he loves playing with; but, to have had a lovely boy doll would have been a good thing. It looks a beautiful toy and to not be made of cold hard plastic can only be a good thing – really like the look of it.

I love the idea of this doll, it looks like a less scary cabbage patch kid! also it looks gender nuetral enough to give to my son which is always a bonus as i’m no good at playing with cars!!!

I think the Empathy Dolls are a marvelous idea – some children would really benefit from a doll like this to tell all about it
Sheila Bound says
Oh I think this doll is adorable . I’ll find it very difficult to give to my neice if I were lucky enough to win but I guess I would have a quick cuddle , a few tears then pass it on.There’s just something about it’s face and body language that just appeals to me.Will share on facebook.

I have just been informed about your dolls and I have to say they are the cutest I have ever seen and I am in LOVE. My daughter is 14 months and now is getting very interested in dolls. I really like the fact the Ruben dolls are soft and not plastic. I have always thought that soft dolls have a quality look about them, but often are flimsy. The Ruben dolls look soft and solid as per the stated weight. I can see the little boy, girl bits and nappy coming in handy for explaining certain things and of course potty training. Great product so glad I was told about this website 🙂

The dolls are lovely and would make a wonderful gift to an older sibling on the birth of the younger. A present from little bro or sis to big bro or sis.
