Tuesday pm we did indeed manage some Latin (me and Fran) and both really enjoyed doing it; i could remember enough to get her started and explain what was going on. I do love Galore Park and as simple text books go, i think every one we’ve had would get 5 out of 5 for me; i wish they had a consumable workbook for maths as the pdf is a bit expensive, though i think the sheets look good but it is enough to put me off buying it. The books themselves though – fab. We’ve got french, latin, english, history, geography and science in varying levels. If you JUST followed the books it might be dryish but so far we’ve found them great for jumping off points – not as “now read this” as SOTW is but certainly inspiring.
Fran and i made it through a verb, gender and plurals and learned some vocab while also seeing what words from English they had spawned (nautical, agriculture) and both got a huge sense of achievement from it. She did the first workbook page and i was strict and marked her down for inaccuracy but generally she did very well; it will do her no harm to see that it relies so firmly on endings being right and learning to concentrate. My mum used to say “if you were a pharmacist you’d have just killed someone and gone to jail!” when i made silly mistakes (bit harsh!)
After that we made a start on Born with a Bang which we had borrowed (along with a pile of others) from Helen and she has done a lovely post with links on them here. Got through 1 1/2 books and everyone loved them so lots more bound to come out of that; questions on elements, solar system, matter, materials, time and “how on earth can LIGHT get sucked into a black hole???” (don’t ask me, ask.. erm.. Bob!!!)
Wednesday was Latinetc again and went down just as well second time; i was pleased to fill a couple of gaps with a nice craft kit and then story telling and all my lot enjoyed science, latin and music as well as french that happened without me quite spotting it. I think it is probably Amelie who is getting the most out of this without realising she is but both the big 2 are revelling in it. They were suitably disgusted by the effect of a cigarette on some cotton wool and Fran was inspired to a whole page of handwritten rant!!!! Maddy adores the music with bells and all of them are liking having time with friends. A brief but enjoyable stop at the Beans afterwards while i browsed more books and then home to collect Max, have tea (curry) and attempt early nights.
Today has mainly had boring ed plus me being ranted at by people who are not possible to reason with but everyone is happy here otherwise. Tomorrow will bring news which will be scary and good or annoying and difficult so i’m all wound up on that and also contorting myself into knots over something i just can’t decide on at all. I really wish i could just see clearly on it but i can’t and it is driving me completely mad.

‘boring ed’ 🙂
Tis lovely having you all come over here on a Wednesday as well .
It’s gravity that stops light escaping from a blackhole – the blackhole being so dense and so having high gravity. Possibly easier(?!) if you think of light to be particles/photons. But you rapidly dive into Quantum mechanics and thinking about he physics of this and blackholes soon makes my brain hurt.

I love Born With A Bang, and the other books in the set. Beautiful books. R was interested for ages about black holes, origins of the universe, black holes…all makes my brain hurt, but very interesting.
