Who pulled your chain?

June 7, 2007 by

Another lovely day, with photos on flickr for those who might want to see. Lots of them are beach, so i made the friends and family only for now, but i’ll unmark the okay ones after.

Started off with a fast campsite exit to Tesco as we had no breakfast in. Launceston provided that and a picnic and then we headed off across the moors to Dartmouth, a place which is bizarrely inaccessible by nomal roads. It makes Kessie seem positively central and well serviced! We did follow the Dart all the way across though, so that was fun AND educational. Managed to get a spot in the castle carpark, ate lunch overlooking the estuary and then, after giggling at a conversation btwn Fran and Maddy about fun v educational activities, went into the fort. Aside from Josie, who got thoroughly spooked by the whole place, they seemed to enjoy it; they all pretended to fire cannons and i thoroughly enjoyed discussing pulling the security chain across the harbour with them. Such a great way of foxing the enemy!

After that we drove to a lovely beach which was called… um… Bigbury Sands i think; has an island just off shore with a hotel or something on it. Utterly fab spot, Max used to go as a kid and built an excellent sand castle.

While we waited for the tide to come in (with discussion as to the how and why of that) fran and Maddy had a great game building guardhouses for it.

Those 2 had a lovely day together; bizarrely they entertained themselves for about 2 hours in the car, playing a game with their new swimming costumes!!!!

Eventually the sea got it; but it was a good one, Uncle Rich and Grampty would have been impressed by it! Poor old Josie hated the experience; she really didn’t like us playing with the sea, you could just tell she felt we were messing with something dangerous. Funny really, a baby sense of danger that eventually she’ll lose as she starts to see that some risks are okay and fun. She wailed when we went near it though 😆
Favourite bit of the day was probably the shriek of “Crocs!!!!!!” that rang through the car as we drove by a tiny village shoe shop with them in the window – so now Amelie and Maddy also have some (such great shoes, the size 1 plus Doodles problem is solved!) We even bought silly thingies for them.

The hotel on the island off Bigbury Beach is the one where Agatha Christie wrote her
    novels you know!

Thought you’d like to know that.

By the way do you need me to re-send the girlpower smiley?

Yes that’s right – we went there two years ago with M&D when Rowan was 10 months. Was lovely beach – really good spot.. nice and secluded with lovely view. That hotel is white isn’t it? I think I can remember it..

    🙂
