Ribena and Nuts don't mix.

March 2, 2007 by

We spent Wednesday with the Beans, celebrating SB’s 6th birthday; a jolly nice time was had by all and it was lovely to see T-bird, Katy, NattyEm and others too. I was extremely tired and definitely a bit discontected; i was certainly aware of it and i’m sure other people were too. Sorry about that 😕

Yesterday was another morning of very normal normals, followed by the arrival of my dad in the afternoon, who brought lunch with him. The children were delighted by bottle of Ribena, which Josie promptly tipped all over the carpet. Hurrah for the Ady Machine.
The girls all had a lot of fun with him while i went out on a bike ride which i nearly, but not quite, regretted ever starting. The wind was blowing in a completely opposite direction to normal so all the hard bits were easy and all the easy bits hard. The most bizarre moment was a little slope towards the end that i normally coast down at about 14 mph, i had to pedal hard to get down it at 8mph! 😯

When i got back, to find rounds of Mario Kart and Stick Cricket in progress, we doled out a set of ‘Free From’ nutty bars that my Dad had brought, mainly for Ams as they had no milk etc in them. By half a bar in, Amelie was frantically scratching at her tongue, which came up in little spots and was stinging, then she got hives to the side of her mouth and shortly after that she was violently sick. (Ribena vomit, thank heavens for the Ady Machine 🙄 ) As soon as she’d been sick, all the itching subsided.

It was completely bizarre; she’s never shown any evidence of a nut allergy, though i haven’t particularly let her have them but i just can’t see how it was anything else. The bars had cashews, hazelnuts and brazils in them, though they did say “not for peanut allergy sufferers” too – and i’ve got a vague feeling a family member had an aversion to Brazils in the past. But.. .well, i’m just baffled really and i can hardly bear the thoguht of having to cut out yet another thing. Milk is bad enough 🙁

Ho hum. Anyway, kids will probably Hama for 2 days now – i’m on the month of my life again as i need to shift as much as i can this month so as to make the end of the tax year bearable so i’ve really got to work it. i couldn’t risk not getting in all the new things, but it is going to make the next 3 weeks ‘interesting’ to say the least.

Poor Amelie! It may be worth getting the whole gamut of allergy tests for her. I’m sure you’re going to report it to your GP who may refer you if there’s enough history on her file.

Does the Ady machine (what is that?) remove trodden in bits of Fimo?

Good point. I suppose i had better.

Ady machine is really a Vax carpet washer and erm… not really. But i’m reliably informed that bicarb does.

Yeek, that sounds horrible for poor Ami – and the carpet! I have known of people allergic to certain nuts – Brazil nuts are often the culprits. Probably a good thing that she did vomit so quickly. Certainly worth investigating further.

Poor Ami, poor carpet and poor you! We have a ‘George’ very useful!

Yeah. C’s nephew is allergic to Brazils. Hasn’t shown any signs of other nut allergies, but I think they avoid them to be on the safe side. Glad she was ok afterwards – like Michelle said, worth getting a decent work-up on her?

I remember reading somewhere, sometime, that vomiting something and being fine after you’ve got it out of your systems is a sign of an intolerance, not an allergy. Which is still a pain but far less dangerous.

And cutting things out is not as bad as it sounds… you get used to it after a while and it becomes a habit. (I’ve been avoiding wheat, most dairy, sugar, oranges, cashews, pork, and mushrooms for seven months now. I know what I’m talking about.) It’s having to think about it that is the hardest part, not the actual not-eating things. But once you get past the ‘why can’t I have this, it’s not fair’ stage it’s alright.

Can’t find that game I liked from Melrose (I know, I said I wouldn’t buy it but I’ve changed my mind!)

Have to wait until after end of tax year. I’m running on cash flow empty at the moment 😕

Poor darling. I know what a complete pita it is cutting stuff out as three years later I am still really suffering and the list is just getting longer.

    Cash flow? What’s that then?

Oh, poor Amelie. I sympathise with your feelings at having to cut more stuff out; my eldest was allergic to wheat for years. She’s been back on it again for about a year and doesn’t seem to be having any problems, but it was *such* a pain while it lasted!

oh poor Amelie! Hope your dad didn’t feel too bad about bringing stuff that made her poorly! and hurrah for the Ady machine! At least if it’s “just” brazil nuts that should be easier to exclude than milk, they aren’t in so many things as they hide milk in but yes, still a total PITA!

What a shame! I developed a hazelnut allergy during my last pregnancy. It started with a mild tingling of the tongue and throat. I didn’t really take much notice as it was so mild and I didn’t connect it to the nuts. The next time I had a hazelnut, however, I had a really severe reaction and dh had to take me to A&E. Fortunately everything was OK, and the reaction subsided without needing medication. It would be worth getting Amelie checked as it was a very distressing experience.
