Just to prove i started reading Ms Truss…

November 1, 2006 by

… i wish to point out to the person that left me a message in text speak the other day, that “lyk” is only one letter shorter than “like”. The time saved in reducing the word to ungrammatical twaddle is unlikely to leave you the time to save the universe (particularly as i feel anyone who can write an entire paragraph in unreadable drivel, while actually apologising for it, is unlikely to contain the capacity for promoting universal peace.) Further more, “tork” is in fact NO shorter than “talk” and did not save you any time at all, it merely made you look stupid. And saying “soz, i’m torking lyk msn” just made me all the more pitying.

So there.

I send texts in proper English too – although I have been known to delete marginally unnecessary words if the ones I wanted to write didn’t fit into the character allowance – I don’t get any free texts!

What was so annoying, was it wasn’t a text; it was an email (of sorts)

Text speak is one of my pet hates. Really, really don’t get me started on it…

    😀

I have tried leaving out the odd apostrophe in texts, but I can’t do it. I can cope with misspellings when typing fast in IMs, but that’s it.

I have to use proper words in texts. Sometimes I use dodgy grammar, like in a telegram, but only if I’m in a hurry.

Tork? *shudder* A colleague of mine used an excellent word yesterday that I think is spelled “rork” or “rawk”. It’s the kind of cheesy intense American rock music that had its peak in the 80s and involved men with too much hair and tight trousers, and is definitely different from “rock” music.

I detest text speak too, though I find myself slipping and doing it sometimes.
    Never in an email though.

I’m OK with text speak in texts, if it saves time, although sometimes I struggle with my 19 year old’s messages. Someone said “natch” to me in a comment the other day and I had to look it up!!!

I usually text in proper English too – unless I have to squeeze words into the character allowance. I use predictive text and it is much quicker to text in proper English when using it because it doen’t recognise text speak words.
