Education rules.

February 28, 2006 by

The girls seem to like Education City. maddy spent a long time on it this morning, then Amelie did, and Fran and i spent ages together on it this afternoon. After the maths wobble of the other week, i want to see if she really did have gaps in what she understood, so i set her up with a “MyCity” full of the harder Year 2 stuff and sat with her as she worked through the games, so i could write down anything that was difficult or whatever. She sailed through them all, surprising me at times with her ability to understand new types of question and by the end of it, there were only 3 games out of about 30 she thoguht she’d like to do again to understand them better. Then she asked me to set her up a City of Year 3 stuff ready for tomorrow so i acquiesced to her request 😉

It might be expensive-ish, but if they like it after a month, i might get it for them; it is a very easy way of keeping someone occupied and it seems to suit everyones style of leanring quite well, sort of Studydog-ish but for other stuff.

This morning Maddy and i looked at some Ladybird books together and she drew and DS’d. Amelie played Dora inbetween computer time. Fran read (Fairy Book 25 now!), did some handwriting and English and tootled about doing things she wanted to.

This afternoon they’ve painted suncatchers and played more with Fun Blox. I’ve sent most of the phenomenal number of parcels the last few days have yielded, new products and a newsletter having produced something of a rush and taken them dancing. And chatted to Kate and whittled about all the paperwork i haven’t done yet.

There are NEVER enough hours in the day. Why not?

I really like education city too and the children do so we’ve had several trials, but it’s just too pricey for us given how faddy they can be. I tried D on study dog several times and he just hated it, he found it repetitive and boring (and frankly so did I!). I think there is probably enough free online stuff available to set mine up on without paying for education city though.

grin, Debbie, that stops someway short of being an enlightening statement for most of us!

I agree in some ways about Ed City, though i like the city feature as it does mean you can set them up a set of things to do.

Re the internet and free stuff, i think that is diminishing to some extent as people try to make money (fairly i think!) out of good ideas and thier time. Plus finding and policing it is hard when you are being pulled 4 ways at once!

F likes Education City but so far she has very often chosen to play the same games over and over again, so I’m never quite sure if it’s worth it. There is a lot of stuff there though and the variety is good.

Pip loves EducationCity and we’ve had endless trials but they’ve stopped now.

ahem, we’re not using ours half as much as we could, especially now, I could slip you the login details if you like 😉

ISTR we did have trial or two of EC but decided against it for whatever reason. I think probably though that SB wouldn’t have got enough out of it at the time. Nic – Study dog is boring 🙂 It just goes on much to repetively

Ernest loves StudyDog – what this says about his boring repetitive nature I hate to think! We none of us could be much bothered with EC though.

Yeah, everyone here has liked Studydog so far. I think EC probably appeals to my lot in the way the CBeebies site still does, colourful and in your face. Mind you, if it has them doing something, i’m probably happy!

The trick with Ed City is to only let them play once a week – seems to work in T’s school, I help in IT lesson and they *adore* it LOL!
