And then…

February 10, 2006 by

Fran is desperate for some “more grown up films” to watch, all of a sudden.

I’m at a bit of a loss since there is nothing i remember from childhood really and althoguh i like films of classic books, i’d kind of like her to read the books first. And i can’t stand Rugrats or anything like that either.

So erm… can anyone suggest anything? 🙄

LOTR? How grown up do you mean? Troy? Maybe a bit too grown up. Pirates of the Carribean. A Series of Unfortunate Events, Cheaper by the Dozen, then we get into the realms of stuff my 11 plus year old have watchd they weren’t supposed to like Armageddon, Con Air and Airforce 1. The perils of upstairs T.V.

I’m almost afraid to comment because everyone has such varying views about what’s okay to watch. And mine are all boys so I guess Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is out, huh?? No really, they don’t watch that either. One I got at the Christian bookstore I really like is called AngelWars. They battle evil and it a wonderul way to promote good stuff to my boys. They have a girl angel in there too. They are all very loving, very brave and very bold for God. They’re cool. Maybe too much if she’s a sweet little one but it’s a suggestion.
IN HIm….oh I love the look of your blog.

How about musicals like Oliver and Dr Dolittle? Or The Box of Delights? The Narnia series (BBC videos)? My Fair Lady? Anne of Green Gables? None of these are cartoons, and all help to counter the materialism in our society by celebrating the joy of just being alive!

Grown up films that kids enjoy are usually like flubber, ghost, parenthood, ET…anything likely to shown at Sunday teatime. But if it’s just an escape from Disney, the films about the boy and the Orca are pretty well loved here (can’t think what they’re called and I’m not at honme…Alison’s kids watched it recently I think) and we just choose from that really cheap bit in Blockbusters where they have plenty of non animated films suitable for kids. The titles never stick with me but Pip’s seen quite a few from those shelves and is rarely dissapointed.

PMSL Heather, your cover wasn’t that impenetrable you know! 😀

Tintin, my lot love anything with Jim Carrey in, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a family fave, Gwenny loves stuff like The Parent Trap, Three Men and a Baby/Little Lady, Cool Running, Rat Race, Johnny English, Bean – anything that’s a bit slapsticky really … Ferris Bueller, Home Alone (all 4!), the Marx Brothers, Short Circuit … the films of The Secret Garden and The Little Princess are good, and she might never read them! Um, Superman, Indiana Jones, the two Bill and Ted’s (history lesson thrown in 😉 ), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Violet adores it, I haven’t watched it though), and they all loved Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve! I’ll stop now 😉

Basically, anything without sex in it, they don’t care about swearing, and if it’s funny all the better 🙂

  11. Alison says

    February 10, 2006 at 11:09 am

Oh, Freaky Friday! Nothing at all like the book, so it doesn’t matter which you read or see first 🙂

  12. merry says

    February 10, 2006 at 11:29 am

Grin… oh i wish she’d like Disney till she was 18. I go mildly mental at Slapstick really (are there realy 4 Home Alones?)

She’s hopeless at following plots, but that wouldn’t matter with Ocean’s Twelve i don’t think, i’m not convinced there was one! Hmmm.. she’d probably be brave enough for LOTR now though actually… hmmmm….

  13. Chris says

    February 10, 2006 at 11:44 am

I can’t wait until they stop watching Disney.

Out of interest, why does it matter that you don’t like Rugrats and the like? Fran might. The films are pretty good I reckon.

  14. merry says

    February 10, 2006 at 11:56 am

Fran doesn’t mind them. I just can’t stand that “ugly kid” drawing and how awful they all are! They do the “Pop Idol crawl” all over my skin.

  15. Sarah says

    February 10, 2006 at 12:14 pm

How about the Princess Diaries? or there’s that Ice Princess film out atm as well, isn’t there? They’re all Disney …

Alison’s list is pretty much what I would have said though. The slapstick stuff really does appeal to them.

Having said all that they are planning to watch Nemo after school today – something to do with a standing joke relating to the ICT Suite – totally!

  16. merry says

    February 10, 2006 at 12:16 pm

Hmmmm… i’ve read a couple of princess Diaries. They were funny, though quite boyfriendy. Are the films the same? I don’t so much mind that as wonder if they’d actually appeal. I’ve put the books on her shelf so she can pick them up when she wants to.

  17. Sarah says

    February 10, 2006 at 12:21 pm

The first film was okay, can’t remember the second, I expect I slept through it 😉

Surprised you didn’t mention the Princess Bride Sarah! Lije and Lulah have watched that a couple of times this week. Willow and Bugsy Malone 🙂

  20. Sarah says

    February 10, 2006 at 12:30 pm

The Goonies? maybe too scary – my lot love Indiana Jones and the Mummy, Edward Scissorhands, Beethoven (and Beethoven’s 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc). How about Garfield? Spy Kids?

  21. Sarah says

    February 10, 2006 at 12:30 pm

oh yes, I forgot about the Princess Bride!

  22. Sarah says

    February 10, 2006 at 12:34 pm

Stuart Little? Inspector Gadget? 80 Days around the World (the one with Jackie Chan) was a hit here, anything musical like Annie, Oliver, Sound of Music … um … will keep thinking but you’ve got enough here to keep you going for a while I think!

  23. Alison says

    February 10, 2006 at 12:44 pm

Yes, all of Sarah’s latest ones too 🙂

C bought the kids Spartacus for Christmas, lol, having had them trained for years in the “I’m Spartacus!” scene, so they will all yell it at appropriate moments. They haven’t watched it all yet though 😉 Contact, Star Wars, Men in Black (1 and 2), Jackass the Movie … 😉

You’re going to regret asking this question Merry ….

The big 3 like anything with Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, and they really love ‘Monty Python’ and ‘The Goodies’, They all enjoyed Garfield, Scooby Doo, Zoe recently watched ‘Nightmere before Christmas’ and ‘The Corpse Bride’, she likes some Disney – mostly the older stuff.

  30. Elizabeth says

    February 10, 2006 at 4:08 pm

Why don’t you go down the Amazon list of Family films–might trigger some interest on her part–and bring up some memories of some you enjoyed as a child. Things like Swiss Family Robinson, Doctor Dolittle–the original, Secret of Roan Inish, etc… There are so many good old ones out there that aren’t viewed as there is no media hype.

  31. Sarah says

    February 10, 2006 at 5:15 pm

Hook – and latterly another version of Peter Pan? Those would both be good as I presume she would already know the story from the Disney version?

  32. Jan says

We’re quite into old musicals here – Singin in the Rain went down well, the Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Calamity Jane, Hans Christian Andersen, Fiddler on the Roof…

M doesn’t follow the plot but if there’s enough dancing that keeps her interest. They both enjoyed Much Ado about Nothing too – we put it on because we thought C would enjoy it and M needed to go to sleep, but she watched the lot.

Time bandits! A real must as is Willow. I *bet* she’d love Time Badits and Willow.

  35. Alison says

    February 10, 2006 at 8:47 pm

I used to have a friend that loved Willow and he would try to get people to watch it. I had it completely confused with Time Bandits, which for some reason I’d taken against, so always refused. One night I succumbed, and realised how wrong I’d been! Was so glad when the kids turned out to love Willow too 🙂

If you have the Disney channel there is a film on Sunday about figure skating. I’ve bookmarked it for me! My boys just like anything with action in it. Thunderbirds, Hulk, Batman… you name it! I don’t suppose any of those would be suitable for a girly girl!
