On the Narnia Films
Partly for Linzi after our conversation the other day.
Which books are not being made into films then?
Edit: (Sent in to the BBC have your Say section but whether it would get published i dare not say 😉 )
I have always loved the Narnia stories and am reading them to my 4 daughters at the moment. It’s impossible not to spot the Christian parallels and anyone who reads “The Horse and His Boy” can hardly fail to spot the outdated and unhelpful images of Arabic culture as seen by a man who had his faults, writing 60 years ago. However, surely it is by recognising and addressing these notions with our children, by discussing with them how times change and how vital tolerance and proper understanding is, that we stand any chance at all of building a world where our children can live in peace and safety?
Narnia has its faults, so does Pullman’s work – i daresay in 60 years people will look critically at his writing too. Narnia is still a fascinating place, just as our own beautiful but imperfect world is.
