Mmmmmm… not quite the science day i'd had planned.

October 13, 2005 by

Todays plan was to bake first thing, then go over to Tammy’s house to share their science day. I was really looking forward to it, so were the girls.

Unfortunately, the day didn’t quite go to plan. Max has had a cold for a year, as it turns out it’s an allergy, but last night he used some Olbas Oil to try and clear his nose a bit. No problem there, the night went as usual. This morning, Josie fell back to sleep in our bed, i came downstairs to do a few bits. Heard her up, went to get her.

Uh oh, Max had left the Olbas oil on his bedside table, and in true Josie fashion sh’d headed straight over, seen something more interesting to suck on that our scant supply of birth control and was swigging Olbas Oil. Well, not swigging, but it was in her mouth and the lid was slightly unscrewed. Swore, grabbed her and she immediately vomited mentol flavoured vomit from my head to my toes. Swore again.

Now you can’t be on an HE email list without knowing that Essential Oils can’t be ingested lightly so a call to Casualty seemed in order. Especially as she was still being sick – and yes indeed, its considered highly poisonous and could you come in please.

Not so poisonous that we didn’t wait 90 minutes in reception, by which time i was fairly convinced she was fine. And by this time i’d come to the conclusion that she’d less swigged it than licked off the cystalline bit around the top. But, it turns out, it can cause breathing difficulites, extreme drowsiness or even liver damage, though the symptoms would have shown within an hour. And she’s fine; 6 hours of obvservation and we are home.

Ho hum. You live and learn. These things happen and all that. Bloody nightmare though, i hate having to go to Casualty with genuine neglectful parent stuff. Insane washing up bowl, bead related, sellotape dispenser related and chip stuck in cleft gap injuries i can stand, Amelie does a nice line in genuine, guilt-free emergencies – but it’s always a bit embarrassing to take a poisoned child in 🙁

My mum had to take a foster child in once, a few months older than Josie, who’d found the rags that we’d been polishing the car with and was happily chewing away on them. Ooops. Glad Josie’s fine! Crap day though.

    What’s Max allergic to then?

Argh! Glad she’s ok. S had got up to many similar japes but never had to visit hospital (yet!) as a result.

I’m half waiting for SS to turn up! I was doing my best “good mother” impression, i can tell you. Surprisingly, i didn’t get any raised eyebrows over her still being bfed or co-sleeping though. Still time 😉

Dust mites apparently; i had to blooming frogmarch him in in the end, including booking the appointment before him and pre-priming the doctor! He’s the master of understatement when it comes to actually telling a medic he’s ill 🙄

Dunno, what he’ll do about being allergic to duct mites; he might have to move out!! 😆

Oh, there are various things you can do to be anti-dust mite – but I think one of the main ones is get rid of your carpets – not too easy in a rented place …

Might be easier to get rid of the husband 😉

Arrgghh (((hugs)). I remember feeling awful when my dd drank neat bleach ex dh had left open on the side when I was in bed after a nightshift. It did seem worst than the usual sticking duplo up the nose type stuff but it was still an accident. Glad she is O.K

my brother is allergic to dust mites. I have heard that the tannin in tea rennders them inert and that spraying carpets and curtains with tea can help…although that always alarmed me what with rather inevitable dodgy looking stains.
Maybe you can get the tannin on its own?

so glad she is okay, we have been worried all day.
M’s allergies improved when we got a dyson with an allergy filter-may just have been the placebo effect but it it seemed to work.

    October 13, 2005 at 6:19 pm

I’m allergic to dust mites and we bought a dyson with filter and Sim uses it reguarly so it really helps. As did a new mattress, duvet and pillows and trying to keep on top of the piles of dust catching crud (trying being the word here). My Mum kindly bought me a carpet free on the ground floor house to live in too, but it’s the night arrangement and the decent hoover that really made the difference.

Oh- forgot to say sorry about your day spent in casualty- I’ve had an obvious recovery in the waiting room incident and it’s really tricky because you just don’t feel you can leave once there. Glad Josie’s okay 🙂

Argh! Yes, I think Beth did the same at that age, and we had to take her down for the 6 hours observation thing. My best one was Ben though – we were at my parents and they were sleeping in my sister’s room, which was in the process of being redecorated. I didn’t notice the bottles and tins in there. In the morning Beth happily wondered into our room to tell us that Ben was drinking paint. Turned out he’d been sampling something from a plain bottle that my dad labelled ‘used white spirit’. And his breath reeked of it. Chris whizzed him in, but by the time they got there (and Ben was still OK) they weren’t nearly as concerned about that as they were about Beth’s Olbas Oil, which is more of a waiting game. Rachael’s of course, was the furniture staple, but she never got as far as A&E because I didn’t even know she’d swallowed it until it came out. How neglectful is *that*?

Anyway, glad Josie’s OK. Hope you’re not still feeling guilty.

Aaaahhhh sorry you had to go into ER with her but glad Josie is OK A friend of mind found her son had swigged a whole bottle of Calpol and had to spend the night in hospital with him and had to endure a lecture from the staff etc because she had left it out! Another friends daughter ate a whole packet of contraceptive pills too!

Oh my goodness!! Never realised Olbas was *that* bad… Glad everything is okay again now though. Anti Alergy bedding is good for keeping dust mites under control – you don’t need the expensive stuff – and wash the bedding quite hot to kill them off. Horrid critters!

Shit! There’s always somehting isn’t there?

Hope you’re feeling ok this evening and you haven’t chewed Max’s ear completely off!

Damp dusting really helps and is much easier for the children to do er I mean help with 🙂

DUSTING????? Did you say DUSTING?????? lol….

No, not chewed at all – he was very nice to me the time Fran ate paracetamol 🙄

Well if he’s allergic it WILL HAVE TO BE DONE! Cheaper than new beds, flooring and other such stuff.

So far we seem to have escaped the child eating/drinking stuff they shouldn’t escapades (other than the possible swallowed coin of E) Glad Josie is ok.

Maybe you need to organise a dusting party 🙂

Scary, yucky day! I’m glad Josie’s alright. That sort of thing could easily happen round here (will be more careful now) but thankfully it hasn’t yet!

Glad josie’s ok, nightmare for you though! Every one of mine has done something similar (except Seb but there’s time)
For dustmites we use waterproof matress covers, hoover and damp-dust a lot, well when we remember.

sorry your carefully planned day was ruined! With kids it seems you cant plan anything. I’ve had scares with my kids like that before too. It’s just one of the trials of motherhood! So glad little Josie was all okay! She’s just the cutest little thing in that pic on the sidebar!

I think you might be right, clear the decks and invite Ros and Joyce (and perhaps Sarah too) to come and clean… those are the cleanest people i think i know. Obviously i could invite Nic, Alison and Layla too but then it would just descend into a drunken rabble 😉

  26. Roslyn says

Joyce and I can drink with the best of them 🙂

  27. merry says

Yeah, but i’m fairly sure my level of dust would make you clean first 😉

PS – Tammy, i am so sorry, i should have texted you to say it had all panned out okay 🙁 Came rushing home, max left for work instantly and i just blogged it. Bad Merry.

((hugs)) Glad shes OK now though. Its one of those things that you can’t predict, its certainly not neglectful. Then again this does come from someone whose child has now been seen twice for tic tacs up his nose 😉 As for dusting, pah I’m with the get rid of the husband idea!

  31. Claire says

    October 14, 2005 at 2:39 pm

Glad Josie is ok now and as for the dusting thingy whatsit I’d go with the eviction of hubby too!

  32. Alison says

    October 14, 2005 at 3:09 pm

I’m sure Max would rather do the dusting than be evicted 😉

  33. merry says

    October 14, 2005 at 4:15 pm

Hmmmmmmh…. butif he got evicted, he might get a decent nights sleep! And i’d get thin 🙂

In fact, a temporary separation might cure all ills!

  34. Joyce says

    October 15, 2005 at 11:18 am

Glad she’s OK. I’m rather concerned though about the unrealistic expectations people will have about dust free house. Kristy is soon to visit and will rumble me on this. I’m very careful with ktichen and bathroom hygiene, but have always been on the opinion that dust is clean dirt…
