On the horns of a technical dilemma.

October 4, 2005 by

I need to redesign MP, badly. It needs streamlining, it needs sorting, i have a huge pile of stuff to add to it.

I have a tool for doing so, courtesy of Tim, which would do the job admirably. (Its the thing the Puddlers sites are on, for those who know.)

There is just one problem, i hate it 🙁 So i don’t feel remotely inspired to do it, because i forget how it works, i can’t make it do what i want and i don’t have the know-how to make it look and work they way i’d like without relying on Tim to help me. Which isn’t fair, even if he had the time anymore.

So either i hunt for something more user-friendly to me, or i ignore it and leave it as it is, or i use what i know, hopefully better and do the best i can given the circumstances/abilities of that tool.

Wah. Life is never simple. At the moment its hanging over my head and frustrating me terribly though. I hate the fact that MP has festered, i used to love doing it.

I don’t particularly like it either, tbh. But redoing mp is a huge job, and something like that could be brilliantly helpful for it.

Tim says he always has time for you. 😉

If the problem is mambo (and if it is I quite understand, it’s fantastically powerful, utterly capable, and totally horrid) he says we can change the tool.

    We have the technology….

I must admit it really doesn’t grab me, maybe its all the extraneous bumpf that i don’t need that is part of it. I miss the idea of being able to manipulate how it looks though. I’ll have to grab you both at some point and have a talk, but i really want to be able to trwiddle cleanly myself but have the content management system on top of that.

But you can manipulate how it looks. You can have any number of different templates. But you are right, all CMS systems will inevitably limit you in some way.
