UGH
Anyone for a contentious issue???? I’ve spent the morning being battered by email by someone who decided i wasn’t a Christian because i had used the word myth ( as a heading mainly to links to things like Native American Creation Myths) on a page with the Biblical Creation Story on it.
Now, i suspect that most of the Christians i know also think i am not a Christian but whatever i am, i’m not really an atheist or even an agnostic either. I’m just someone who “doesn’t know” but who tries to know, who hates organised religion and all its trappings (and frankly the intolerance i have encountered in it in the past too) and who finds it much more likely that parts of the Bible were written as part of a cultural myth to explain the incomprehensible, than verbatim word handed down by God. I don’t see that makes it any less relevant than the other really. If you choose to think it might have been written by a culture who felt strongly that God led and cared for them, the words would have to be guided by him anyway.
Personally i DON’T believe in the 7 day Creation Story but i don’t have a problem with anyone who does. I just don’t think it sounds terribly likely. Not enough detail. BUT i DO feel deeply irritated about getting mails telling me that unless i start conforming to someone elses verison of Christianity, i won’t go to Heaven and will end up in hell. Its terribly off putting and to be honest, just makes me feel less inclined to follow their suggestions.
I have to say it makes me extremely grateful for the Christians i do know personally who (apart from not lecturing me or battering me) are prepared to talk about it with me in a reasonable and intelligent way. Gives me a lot of respect for them.
How long DO children play in paddling pools i wonder?
