Wailing about a home educating school of whales!!!!!

I have a load of photos that i really will put up tonight but i wanted to record a few things that went on today because they were all a bit awesome in a small but “this is why we do it” sort of a way.

First of all, Friday is a no nursery day – the only one of the week. Every other week we go to an HE group but otherwise we loll, or go to soft play, or visit a friend. Yesterday we lolled- our HE group was intended for the evening but just as we were about to go out there was volumes of vomit, so unfortunately we didn’t!

Anyway, the day was really nice. It started with the 3 of them playing beautifully for ages – a couple of hours, in one bedroom with the Happy Land town set. Periodically, this gets loads of play, and then none for ages. Its strange. As a set (its Early Learning Centre) it appeals to all three in very different ways and so they can enjoy it all together without clashing. Anyway, gave me a lie in and a bit of time to read and relax. Scruff has been a bit eczema-y this last week and we have had broken nights again.

After Scruff went for her nap the big girls came down and experimented with the perler bead kits that a list friend brought back from the states (thanks Ilana!) – Moo was playing with the dolphin and Pud with a flower and butterfly shape. This prompted a conversation about dolphins that went like this.

Pud: What do dolphins eat?
Me: um.. fish i suppose.
Pud: Dead ones?
Me: Well no, i suppose they are live ones swimming and they eat them in the water.
Pud: Thats horrible. Its not fair to just eat other animals when you are one.
Me: Well, you are an animal and you eat meat. You have tuna and chicken and sausages.
Pud: Oh. I do, don’t i? But they aren’t alive.
Me: Well no, but only cos someone else kills them for you.
Pud: Oh….. what do whales eat?
Me:um… fish i suppose, i don’t know what else….
Pud: Mummy.. .your computer will know…..
*hasty google for whales feeding habits which we found, discussed mammals, small mammals, dolphins being fish, how a whale would actually eat a sea lion and finally…
Pud: where do whales live?
Me: In the sea.
*Look of disgust from Pud*
Pud: Yes i know THAT mummy… which sea…?

I don’t know what we are going to do if this particular line of enquiry goes on, cos i know NOTHING about sealife! lol! I will have to do some revision!

A while later, possibly because we had mentioned whales living in schools, Pud suddenly said “I’m sorry you had to go to school and had a sad time mummy” – i must have looked blank because she said “Cos of the nasty girl who was horrible to you?” So we had a bit of a chat about the fact that yes i was bullied but that apart from that my junior school was a nice place where we learnt interesting stuff. We then talked about my senior school and that i wasn’t bullied there but that i felt that it wasn’t a great way of learning. She asked what it was like so i explained about lesson times, and subjects and different teachers and learning the same as everyone else and at the same time whether you were interested or not. She looked astonished and said “But you just CAN’T learn like that!”

Heigh ho :~)

The afternoon was taken up in even more playing together, lots of drawing, colouring, lego aeroplanes, reading, dora books, Pud made a card for Auntie Anne and wrote out a whole sentence, we watched the fireworks across the street, Moo came to the sorting office and they let her empty the post box and turn all the keys and she and i had a fab late supermarket trip where she spotted daddys favourite beer for me!
