Last year we did a lovely art day on Remembrance Day and spent some time discussing the meaning of the day with the girls, reading an appropriate poem and marking the 2 minutes silence. It was a particularly poignant day for me last year, having so recently lost my own son and I found it hard to do all that I would have chosen to do with the girls, especially as they were definitely interested and moved by the sentiment behind it. This year they are outraged by the politics of football getting involved, or over writing perhaps – times change. This year I can think about the sons of mothers lost in war, without getting quite so engulfed in our own loss.
Fran will be at school on Friday this year, so we spent a little time today sat down together and just crafted and talked and thought a little about the day means, to us personally and to the world in general. Felting is a good craft for such moments, given it only really involves not stabbing your own fingers. The results were great.
Here is a quick step by step of how I did mine- the children all made their own way, with very interesting results. Maddy is wearing hers and has gone out. She copied the paper style. Since we decided we might all like to wear our own creations, Fran is taking a donation of £1 each in to school to put in the Poppy Appeal tin 🙂 The photos are not the greatest, since it was dark by the time we finished. I might redo the final ones tomorrow.
