The country is falling apart. I’m having the most stressful week since last April. I nearly said of my life. Jeez. Anyway, you can tell something is seriously amiss with the world, because I made jam. This is quite possibly the most domestic thing I have done in about 10 years and not only that, but it was premeditated.
My friend Tech happened to encourage me to have a go on Twitter one day and so I bought a book (which is great) and a pan and some jars. I fully intended to go up to our local PYO but then our car was off the road for two weeks and? by the time I could go, they had no strawberries left. And strawberries looked the easiest. But then good old Millets Farm provided the goods and once I tracked down the jam sugar (sold out all over!) I decided it was time.
Incredibly simple to do, very nerve-racking. My pan was a bit small, so boiling was scary. Next time, apron and shoes 😆
When it was finally finished, I was not at all sure it was setting, but I left it overnight and this morning it is great. Not hard jam, but not runny, tastes lovely and tangy but sweet enough and has had the thumbs up from all the girls and Max. Max said he’d be really pleased if he’d made it.
I don’t know why I don’t do these things. Somewhere along the line all the plans I had to be that sort of mother and person fell apart. I enjoyed it. I’d enjoy all sorts of other similar things too. I don’t make cakes or parties or try hard enough. But this worked and so I am going to have a go at a few other similar things.
I have awarded myself a Prairie Muffin Level One badge 😀 I am so pleased with myself.
ooooooooo! aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh! Wow! I’ve been wanting to try jam making for years, but have been way too scared to… I’m going to HAVE to give it a try now, besides, I WANT a Prairie Muffin level one badge now!
Well done Merry! Looks yummy 🙂 have fancied making jam but always think its a will be a faff!
” oooh!” It’s amazing how good homemade stuff tastes compared to shop bought! ‘Next time, apron and shoes ‘ lol! – been there done that! Looking forward to what you’ll have a go at for Prairie Muffin Level two 🙂
Looks great. Love homemade jam. Sadly two of my three would reject it on the grounds that it contains ‘bits’! Seem to be waiting a long time for this phase to pass – it never used to be a problem – so will be a while before I take the plunge here. Will you be entering the local horticultural/ produce fair with your new found skill?
The jam looks lovely. I grew up with a mom who made jam every summer (from strawberries we grew in our own garden) yet I can’t imagine doing it for myself now. Good work Merry!
I’m not that kind of mother either, but curiously people think I am. My littlies head teacher was really surprised when I said I barely cooked and could only bake one type of cake!
The jam looks fab, and I love the badge. (I’m avoiding all news feeds, I’m much happier ignorant of our country’s woes.)
x
jam making is on my todo list… so far I’ve bought a book.
very impressed!
Oooh yum! We’ve not made jam, but I might put that on the list of things we want to attempt. We are big in to making our own bread right now, and that jam would go brilliantly on it! (With lashings of butter as well, of course….)
Jam really does taste as good as it looks :)))
I do love you, I do 🙂
Oh well ddone merry, yours for tea?
Kettle’s on – any time you fancy 🙂
Looks delicious, making me dream of cream teas 🙂 if you ever get the urge again to make jam or marmalade then check out http://www.lakeland.co.uk they have lots of ‘jamming products’.
Jam making is very easy. If you need to make jam and can’t find the sugar just add a couple of apples – they have all the pectin you need to make it set. 🙂
